- Make ready 1 cup rice (washed and drained)
- Take 1 cup Toovar Dal (arhar) (washed and drained)
- Prepare 2 small Onions (Finely Chopped)
- Make ready 1 Tomato (Finely Chopped)
- Make ready 4 Green Chillies (slited)
- Prepare 1 strip Curry Leaves
- Make ready 2 tbsp Garlic (Finely Chopped)
- Take 2 Dry Kashmiri Chillies
- Prepare 2 Cloves
- Get 1 " Cinnamon Stick
- Take 6-8 Peppercorns
- Make ready 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
- Prepare 1/2 tsp Asafoetida
- Get 1 tbsp Chilli Powder
- Get 1/4 tsp Turmeric Powder
- Get Salt (As required)
- Take 2 tbsp Ghee/Oil
I have used a mix of tur dal and moong dal to prepare this dal khichdi. Lentils and rice cooked with turmeric, cumin, chilli & curry leaves. I use toor dal which is my preferred dal variety for Dal khichdi; its easy to digest and also cooks quickly. Dal Khichdi is an Indian style lentil and rice one-pot dish.
Steps to make Dal Khichdi:
- In a pressure cooker, add toovar dal, rice, turmeric powder, asafoetida, salt and 5 cups of water. Mix well and pressure cook for 3 whistles. Keep aside.
- In a Kadai, heat ghee/oil. Add cloves, cinnamon, peppercorns, Red Chillies and cumin seeds and Saute on medium flame for few seconds.
- Add little more asafoetida, green chillies, curry leaves, garlic and onions and saute on medium flame for a minute or two.
- Add tomatoes, salt and chilli powder and saute on medium flame for a minute or two.
- Add the cooked rice-dal mixture. Mix well and cook on a medium flame for 2 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve hot.
